As the cooler days fade, now is the ideal time to prepare your winter coat for storage so it is as good as new next season. Start by ensuring your coat is clean before putting it away, as dirt and oils can attract pests and cause fabric damage over time.
There is no need to dry clean a 100% wool coat. Most marks can be wiped with a damp cloth, or treated gently using a small amount of mild wool detergent and water.
Before storing, it is also a great time to freshen up your coat by gently using an electric fabric shaver on a hard, flat surface to remove any pilling. We do not recommend using wool combs, as some can cause pulling and damage to the fabric.
Now your coat is clean, store on a sturdy hanger in a dry, cool space, away from direct sunlight and humidity, to help maintain its shape and protect the fibres. A breathable garment bag can be used for added protection if desired. To deter moths and other pests, hang a natural repellent such as cedar or lavender on the hanger.
With a little care now, your coat will be ready to wear when winter returns.
