Our Story

From a young age I’ve had a love for fashion. My Grandmother, Reta, was a dressmaker. I grew up spending hours watching her in the sewing room - I would sit next to her sketching, cutting, and sewing my own creations.

Whilst living in London my passion for winter clothing grew. It was only after moving back to New Zealand that I struggled to find a winter coat that I loved, but more importantly, was made by New Zealand designers using locally grown wool.

As a farmer’s wife, I wanted to help raise the profile of the New Zealand coarse wool industry, its numerous benefits, and prove that it can be fashionable.

It was this desire that led to Atér – inspired by my grandmother, my love for fashion and to showcase that fashionable wool pieces can be grown, designed and made in New Zealand.

Our Farm

Moana is a third-generation family-run sheep and beef farm in the hills of Otago. The farm runs 3,000 crossbred ewes which produces approximately 12,000kg of coarse wool each year.

Atér coats are made from hogget wool for its durability, strength and length. It is slightly finer than ewe wool at 31 microns, ensuring that every Atér coat will stand the test of time.
